Big Hollywood Review: The Red Button’s New Album ‘As Far as Yesterday Goes’ Channels the Best of ‘60s
The new disc remains retro down to its fab cover photo, a glimpse of a mod harpist playing in a field of honey-wheat grass. But there’s nothing moldy about the melodies spread across this luminous 12-track release.

If you loved the sixties, wore a ribbon in your hair, had a wood guitar with scratches on the neck, ate grass as you sat in the park and loved deeper than you ever believed you could love — as far as yesterday goes is your ticket to those bygone days.
The opening track, CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE, reminds me of the early Beatles. Lively, bouncy and filled with sixties British Invasion gold. I did a double take when I first listened to this song. The same can be said for GIRL, DON’T. The resemblance to the early Beatles is absolutely uncanny.

Things start strongly in the vein of the first album with Ruekberg’s excellent and insanely catchy “Caught in the Middle”, right out of the Help!-era playbook with Rickenbacker and harmonica galore. (His “I Can’t Forget”, which appears later in the album, is another great Beatles ’65 homage.) Following is the sophisticated pop of Swirsky’s title track, a moody midtempo number that compares favorably to some of the debut’s standout tracks like “It’s No Secret” and “Floating By”. Speaking of “Floating By”, the piano-based “Picture” is this album’s closest cousin with its Bacharachian feel.

The group’s second album, “As Far As Yesterday Goes,” has just been issued, and the early reviews are glowing. Some are even calling it the album to beat for 2011. Seth Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg have crafted another sonic wonderland of retro splendor.

It’s hard to say if the new album will outperform its predecessor. However, I suspect that the only thing the first album had that this one doesn’t is the element of surprise. Pop aficionados knew what to expect from As Far as Yesterday Goes. The good news is that they won’t be disappointed.

The first time I listened to The Red Buttons latest album, As Far As Yesterday Goes, the first thing that came to mind was the Tom Hanks film That Thing You Do. Mind you during the 60’s and 70’s bands that carried this sound were in abundance and in this day and age of taking something old and making it new again I’m alright with what The Red Button does with this new album.

Seth (and Mike) are extremely talented musicians from the West Coast who, in 2011, deliver an incredible follow up to their “She’s About to Cross My Mind” album from a few years back. As soon as it came in the mail (thanks Seth) I popped it into the car stereo and was taken to the multi colored musical world of Red Button.
